Pokémon (ポケモン Pokemon?English pronunciation: /ˈpoʊkeɪmɒn/POH-kay-mon[1]) is a media franchise published and owned by the video game company Nintendo and created by Satoshi Tajiri in 1996. Originally released as a pair of interlinkable Game Boyrole-playing video games, Pokémon has since become the second most successful and lucrative video game-based media franchise in the world, behind only Nintendo’s own Mario series.[2] Pokémon properties have since been merchandised into animemanga, trading cards, toys, books, and other media. The franchise celebrated its tenth anniversary in 2006,[3] and as of 28 May 2010, cumulative sales of the video games (including home console versions, such as the “Pikachu” Nintendo 64) have reached more than 200 million copies.[4]

The name Pokémon is the romanized contraction of the Japanese brand Pocket Monsters (ポケットモンスター Poketto Monsutā?),[5]as such contractions are quite common in Japan. The term “Pokémon”, in addition to referring to the Pokémon franchise itself, also collectively refers to the 649 fictional species that have made appearances in Pokémon media as of the release of the Pokémon role-playing game (RPG) for the Nintendo DSPokémon Black and White. Like the words deer and sheep, the word “Pokémon” is identical in both the singular and plural, as is each individual species name; in short, it is grammatically correct to say both “one Pokémon” and “many Pokémon” as well as “one Pikachu” and “many Pikachu”. In November 2005, 4Kids Entertainment, which had managed the non-game related licensing of Pokémon, announced that it had agreed not to renew the Pokémon representation agreement. Pokémon USA Inc. (now The Pokémon Company International), a subsidiary of Japan’s Pokémon Co., now oversees all Pokémon licensing outside of Asia.[6]

Pokémon Black Version and White Version (ポケットモンスターブラック・ホワイト, Poketto Monsutā Burakku & Howaito, “Pocket Monsters: Black & White”) comprise the upcoming fifth generation of the core Pokémon series of RPGs. The games are set to be released on September 18, 2010, in Japan. As of September 2010, there have been a total of 30 new Pokémon officially announced, two of which debuted in the thirteenth Pokémon film in Japanese theaters on July 10, 2010. The games will be released outside Japan in the second quarter of 2011. As of August 2010, Black and White are the fastest DS games to reach one million consumer pre-orders in Japan.

On January 29, 2010, the Pokémon Company announced that a new game was in development for the NintendoDS to be released later that year. Director Junichi Masuda stated that several aspects of the series were being revamped for the new generation. On April 9, 2010, the Japanese website updated with the titles of the versions asPokémon Black and White, and announced a Q3 2010 release date. The games will feature an improved visual style from other Pokémon games, with an increased use of 3D computer graphics than any other of the handheld series. It also has a special feature that allows the user to upload their saved game to the Internet, allowing them to do certain things on an official website.[11][12] Another new feature in the game is the implementation of different seasons tied in with the games’ internal clock.

On August 3, 2010, Masuda announced on his blog that the Black and White game versions will initially only contain brand new Pokémon to evoke a feeling of it being a brand new game, like when the original Pokémongames were first released. In all of the games following the first generation, there were a series of new Pokémon introduced interspersed with Pokémon from the previous generations. For example, Pikachu was introduced inRed and Green, and was obtainable in BlueYellow, and all subsequent main series games; however, Pikachu will not be obtainable in Black and White from the start of the game.

A silhouette of a new Pokémon was shown by Junichi Masuda on the February 7, 2010 episode of Pokémon Sunday, stated to be in the upcoming film for the summer and to be identified in a future episode on February 21. This new character would also be featured in the March 2010 issue of CoroCoro Comic available on February 15, and is the start of the fifth generation of the Pokémon franchise. Since then, the character has been named “Zoroark” (ゾロアーク, Zoroāku), and it evolves from a character named “Zorua” (ゾロア, Zoroa). Both are to be featured in the upcoming film Pocket Monsters Diamond & Pearl The Movie: Phantom Ruler: Zoroark. For pre-order ticket holders, an alternate-colored Raikou, Entei, or Suicune was available for transfer to their DiamondPearlPlatinum,HeartGold, or SoulSilver games. At the theater, players would be able to download a Celebi to the same games. Both of these Pokémon would activate special events in Black and White involving Zoroark and Zorua, respectively.

On April 18, 2010, the episode of Pokémon Sunday showed game footage of a player character walking around in a 3-D environment and a single screenshot depicting a battle between the player’s Zoroark and an enemy Zorua. Host Shoko Nakagawa made note of how the player’s Zoroark’s sprite was a full body sprite as viewed from behind, when in the past all such sprites only showed a smaller portion of the player’s Pokémon’s body. On May 9, 2010, the episode of Pokémon Sunday revealed silhouettes of the three Pokémon available to choose from at the beginning of the games, which were later revealed to be the Grass Snake Pokémon Tsutarja (ツタージャ, Tsutāja), the Fire Pig Pokémon Pokabu (ポカブ), and the Sea Otter Pokémon Mijumaru (ミジュマル). Other information revealed is that the game takes place in the Isshu Region (イッシュ地方, Isshu-chihō) which includes the Hiun City (ヒウンシティ,Hiun Shiti) metropolis. On May 16, 2010, the episode of Pokémon Sunday showed game battle footage, illustrating the new in-battle animations and dynamic camera positioning; also described were Zoroark’s Illusion (イリュージョン,Iryūjon) ability and the special Zoroark acquired by the movie ticket pre-order gift Pokémon.

On May 28, 2010, both the official Japanese and English Pokémon websites revealed names and designs of the two major Legendary Pokémon of these games, who also serve as the game version mascots: the White Yang Pokémon Reshiram (レシラム, Reshiramu) for Pokémon Black and the Black Yin Pokémon Zekrom (ゼクロム,Zekuromu) for Pokémon White. The July 2010 issue of CoroCoro Comic revealed the C Gear (Cギア, Shī Gia?) wireless interactivity features, the ability to upload game data to the internet and the player’s computer, several brand new Pokémon, new Pokémon moves, Reshiram and Zekrom’s Pokémon types, details on the Celebi/Zorua event, and a new character: Professor Araragi (アララギ博士, Araragi Hakase), the first female Pokémon professor to appear in the video games. The June 27, 2010, episode of Pokémon Sunday, made the announcement of the release date as September 18, 2010, and a yet-to-be named character. The June 28, 2010, episode of Oha Suta, showed a trailer, which included its release date, new gameplay footage, several new characters, more new Pokémon, and a three-on-three battle system. The August 2010 issue of CoroCoro Comic elaborated upon many new game mechanics: the three-on-three system, the online Global Link system, an online Dream World that can allow for access to other Pokémon, access to an area that uses the Wi-Fi called the High-Link (similar to the Underground), a special feature called Live Caster for video chat on the Nintendo DSi and Nintendo 3DS, kanji support, aesthetic differences between the two versions of the game, areas exclusive to the game versions, new characters, new moves, new abilities, and new Pokémon.

The July 25, 2010, episode of Pokémon Sunday introduced the new phantom Pokémon Victini (ビクティニ, Bikutini), which initially appeared in a trailer for the 2011 Pokémon film that was shown with screenings of Phantom Ruler: Zoroark. It is noted to be Pokémon No. 000 in Isshu’s regional Pokédex, and is only accessible by downloading a special item from Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, DS Stations, and Nintendo Zones (such as those found in Japanese McDonald’s restaurants) to a game save. This will initially be available for a month following the games’ release date.

In August 2010, one month before the games’ release in Japan, Pokémon Black and White gained a total of 1.08 million pre-orders, becoming the fastest game on the Nintendo DS to break the one million mark. Japanese magazine Famitsu Weekly awarded the game a perfect 40 out of 40 score, becoming the 15th game to receive such as distinction, as well as obtaining the highest score ever given to a Pokémon video game by the publication.

Pokemon Ranger Guardian Signs Rom (U) (NDS)

Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs (ポケモンレンジャー 光の軌跡, Pokemon Renjā Hikari no KisekiPokémon Ranger: Tracks of Light) is an action role-playing game video game for the Nintendo DS. It is the sequel of Pokémon Ranger and Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia. It was released in Japan on March 6, 2010 and a US release on October 4, 2010. The European release date has been verified as November 5, 2010.

Gameplay revolves around capturing Pokémon with the Capture Styler, which now lets you call out your Pokémon for support and use “Ranger Signs” to call Pokémon to help in captures. Other features include four player cooperative play with unique missions. The game also includes Wi-Fi mission downloads, one of which gives you access to Deoxys, which can be moved to the DS’s other Pokémon games. According to the Pokémon website, you can also encounter Entei, Raikou, and Suicune.

The game takes place on the fictional island region of Oblivia. The story starts off with a Pichu with a ukelele,[5] who is known through the game as the Ukelele Pichu. This Pichu is like the starter Pokémon of this game. It will join the player as their Partner Pokémon, after they fix its broken ukelele. The player is able to summon Legendary Pokémon like Raikou (after encounter in Radio Tower), Entei (after encounter) and Suicune (after encounter in Canal Ruins) by drawing their ‘Ranger Signs’ on the touch screen. The new enemy, the Pokémon Pinchers, are poaching and selling Pokémon, according to the Pokémon Ranger: Guardian Signs Part 1 short. The player’s job is to stop the Pokémon Pinchers and restore peace in Oblivia. A few times after the player meet the legendary TimeTravel Pokémon, Celebi, at the forest shrine, and when they meet it, Celebi will come to take them back to the past. After it takes the player back at the Haunted Mansion, it will return to its Shrine, and then the mission to catch it will be unlocked. To get one of the Eon Pokémon, Latios (if Ben, the male character, is chosen) or Latias (If Summer, the female character, is chosen), the player must activate all the shrines on the islands and the last one in the East Sea to gain their trust. Then they return to the small island that they started on, and the Eon should appear. Once the player captures it, they will get its Ranger Sign. The Eon Pokémon can fly faster than a Staraptor, and in battle, if its head is tapped, it can call its Counterpart, Latias (if Ben is chosen), or Latios (if Summer is chosen) to create a Whirlwind that centers all the Pokémon in the battle. After the player catches Blue eyes in the Haunted Mansion, Red eyes will tell them that he has their counterpart, either Summer or Ben. Once they trade for their counterpart and the Pinchers leave, Entei will come. After it is captured and called it with its Ranger Sign to ride it, the counterpart will be amazed, and the player learns Entei’s ability to smash boulders. In the Aftergame, after thecredits roll, the player will follow the legendary birds. They will have finished the game when the Air Fortress has been destroyed. First the player will follow Articuno, then Zapdos, and finally Moltres. After Moltres lands in Hualdera Volcano, it is catchable. Then Articuno, then Zapdos.
